THE PLAY

SYNOPSIS

Kickball explores the interpersonal dynamic between and shifting mindsets of Riley and Jonah, two first-year students who have taken very different roads to end up at the same Midwestern public university. Faced with budding external pressures from both their new environment and each other, Riley and Jonah reconsider their shared past and their shifting present, finding similarities between themselves and reexamining their own ideas about allyship and empathy in one another’s image.

CHARACTERS

Jonah, 19, a first-year college student, on a baseball scholarship, male

Riley, 18, a first-year college student majoring in art, a “social justice warrior,” female

Scottie, a very enthusiastic peer educator, pre-recorded, any gender

Marilyn, Riley’s mom, pre-recorded or offstage, female

Dr. Jackson, a Furwood professor, pre-recorded “wah wah” voice from The Peanuts

Content Warning: In order to accurately represent millennial speech patterns and examples of poor allyship, this performance will feature strong language and brief problematic discussion of LGBTQ+ identities.
